Project: Where Water Remembers is a research-based project and a three-channel multimedia video series that traces the continuities of imperial and colonial violence through the metaphor of water. Centring the narratives of Zainichi Korean (Japanese Korean) communities and individuals who cultivated their lives near these waters, the water reads these individual and collective memories, intertwined with landscape, as “embodied archives and testimony.”
To investigate how collective trauma and memory are embodied and transmitted to generations, Yun conducted research in eight cities across Japan, excluding Okinawa and northern Japan, and interviewed second- to fourth-generation descendants of those who were displaced or migrated under conditions shaped by Japanese imperial violence. Through these encounters, the work examines how gendered labour and migration, familial memory, personal and communal forms of care, and acts of mourning are embodied, circulated, and sustained across time and generations.
The title Where Water Remembers reflects a geographic and political reality: the residential areas of these communities were predominantly situated in marginal territories avoided by the Japanese public—along riverbanks and canals distanced from the urban centre, and near sites of (forced) labour, such as coal mines, factories, airports, and harbours. At the same time, the project approaches water not only beyond the scale of local geography, but also as a broader historical frame through which Japan can be read, foregrounding water’s capacity to traverse time and hold memory.

프로젝트: 물이 기억하는 곳은 물의 메타포를 따라 제국주의적 폭력과 식민주의의 연속성을 추적하는 리서치 기반 프로젝트이자 3채널 멀티미디어 비디오 시리즈이다. 이 작업은 강과 물길 주변에 삶의 터전을 일구어 온 자이니치 코리안 공동체와 개인들의 서사를 중심에 두고, 그들의 개인적·집단적 기억을 풍경과 결합한 ‘체화된 아카이브와 증언’으로 읽는다.
집단적 트라우마와 기억이 어떻게 몸에 새겨지고 세대를 가로질러 전해지는지를 탐구하기 위해, 작가는 오키나와와 일본 북부를 제외한 일본의 8개 도시에서 리서치를 수행하며, 일본 제국주의 폭력 아래 (강제) 이주를 하였던 이들의 2세부터 4세 후손들을 인터뷰하고 리서치하였다. 이러한 만남을 통해 작업은 젠더화된 노동과 이주, 가족 기억, 개인과 공동체의 돌봄의 서사, 그리고 애도의 행위가 시간과 세대를 가로질러 어떻게 체화되고, 순환하며, 지속되는지를 질문한다.
프로젝트의 이름 ‘물이 기억하는 곳’은 하나의 지리적이고 정치적인 현실에서 출발한다. 이 공동체들의 거주지는 대체로 일본 사회가 기피하던 주변부, 곧 시내와 동 떨어진 강변과 강수로를 따라 발생하고 유지되었고, 그리고 탄광·공장·항만과 같은 (강제)노동의 장소 인근에 형성되어 있었다. 또한 물이라는 개념을 작은 지역성을 넘어 일본을 큰 틀의 역사적 내러티브로 바라보며, 물이 지닌 시간적 초월성에 대한 시점도 제시한다.
